This strawberry pie tastes JUST like the classic pie from Frisch’s Big Boy/Shoneys! It uses 6 simple ingredients, and a pre-made pie crust to make it easy!
Classic fresh strawberry pie… if you’ve never had it, you absolutely MUST try it! ย This copycat version tastes JUST like the Frisch’s Big Boy or Shoneys treat, and is made super easy. ย Just 6 common ingredients and an easy pre-made frozen pie crust… you can totally do this!
You guys, I’m so excited to share this pie with you all today!! ย Here in Cincinnati, Spring means two things… Reds baseball, and Frisch’s Big Boy will be serving strawberry pie soon.
But now I don’t have to wait, I can have this pie any time I want… and so can YOU!
Aside from my crust issues lol, this is actually a really easy pie to make!
- Pre-bake the pie crust (according to the package directions), and let cool
- Boil water, sugar and cornstarch until thick, then whisk in dry strawberry gelatin
- Let mixture cool slightly, whisking occasionally
- Slice strawberries and add them to baked pie crust
- Pour gelatin mixture over the top, refrigerate for at least 4 hours
And don’t forget the whipped cream!! ย Of course, it’s optional, but I think a dollop really tastes awesome!
If you’re reading this and going, “hey, that’s a Shoney’s pie!”, I’m pretty sure Shoney’s and Frisch’s Big Boy are owned by the same company, because they’re menus are nearly identical (from what I’ve seen). ย Frisch’s Big Boy is just the regional restaurant around here ๐
We love to serve this strawberry pie year round, but it always tastes best during the Spring and Summer months (when the strawberries are freshest). ย It would be perfect for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Sunday, Tuesday… basically any day that ends in y ๐
I really hope you all make and enjoy this Copycat Frisch’s Big Boy Fresh Strawberry Pie!!

Ingredients
- 1 frozen pie crust (deep dish if you can find it)
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3 Tbsp cornstarch
- 3 Tbsp dry strawberry gelatin (like Jello - about 1/2 a 3 oz box)
- 2 cups sliced strawberries (sliced in half or quarters, depending on size of berries)
- whipped cream, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prick bottom and sides of frozen pie crust with fork, and bake according to package directions. If you're worried about the crust puffing up, before baking, place a piece of parchment paper inside the crust and add about a cup of dried beans or rice. Let cool.
- To a small sauce pan, add water, sugar, and cornstarch and whisk to combine. Heat over MED heat until boiling, reduce heat a bit and simmer several minutes, until thickened.
- Whisk in dry strawberry gelatin and set aside to cool, stirring occasionally.
- Wash and slice strawberries, then add to cooled pie crust. Pour strawberry gelatin mixture over strawberries. Refrigerate at least 4 hours, until set.
- Serve cold, with whipped cream if desired.

Can I reduce sugar to 1 cup?

Iโve only tested this recipe as written. So without testing and retesting it myself, I can’t say for certain if that would work. But if you do some experimenting, I’d love to know how it turns out!

Eazy and great! Will make again!!

The pie is easy and delicious. Have made it 3 times. This last time I accidentally picked up a box of sugar free strawberry jello. Didnโt notice until it was time to add it in. There is only about a tablespoon and half of jello in the box. Had no choice but to use it. There was absolutely no difference in taste – just fewer calories. Lucky mistake!

This strawberry pie recipe, was delightful and very colorful. I was thrilled to find the recipe! Growing up in Akron (Fairlawn) Ohio, Manners Big Boy was an iconic place to go after a movie date when I was in high school! We ordered the strawberry pie which overflowed with whipped cream, or theIr hot fudge cake! What a treat! Making this for a dinner party brought back those fun memories and the deliciousness of this pie. I made my own crust and used fresh made whipped cream. Wow! Living in California, strawberries are available throughout the year, so this will be a favorite “go to” dessert!

So easy to put together. Love the addition of the strawberry gelatin. Becomes glossy, not too sweet and holds together well. Looks restaurant quality when sliced. Does not last long.

Loved it! Next time I will add more strawberries but this is so perfect!

I worked for Shoneys for 15 yrs and made 100’s of these pies over the yrs. The pie crust was what made the pie taste so great. It’s a shortbread pie shell and as for filling, we uses strawberry gel that came in packs. Where I live it’s harder to find those in regular stores, so I will have to try this recipe for it.
Thank you.

Hi. Can this pie be made the day before?
Thank you.
The Chunky Chef says
Yes, absolutely ๐

When I was still working, employees took turns buying or baking a cake for each otherโs birthdays. I went rogue one year and made 4 strawberry pies. I could have made 10 and it wouldnโt have been enough. Needless to say, the birthday girl requested I supply dessert for her birthday every additional year we worked together (19 years). She still reminds me of this 40 years later.

Excited to make this pie! ๐๐Iโm Reading a few of the comments stating that it never โsetโ โฆ can you tell me ; what should the consistency of this pie be? The ingredients you list tell me that this should be like a gelatin kind of holding it all together? Or is it indeed a softer set than actual jelloโฆ thanks!!
The Chunky Chef says
It’s supposed to be a bit softer than traditional Jell-O, which is where I think a lot of the other confusion has come from ๐ Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you for replying!!๐๐๐

I have made this pie myself many times but today I wanted it immediately and since my husband and I were out we stopped by Big Boy for lunch. I ordered the brawny lad and I asked if they still had strawberry pies and she said yes. By the time I had my lunch the waitress came out with their fresh big boy strawberry pie. I was so glad we stopped there and I am so glad that big boy will make them for you on the spot oh, it may take a few minutes but they will do it. Just pie was delicious and I’m ready to take into my big-boy strawberry pie.

If I remember correctly, you replace the water with sprite or 7 up to make this authentic.

I made this recipe in small 6โ pie pans for my extended family and dropped them off, keeping one for our house. My husband tasted it and said, โHey, this tastes just like the strawberry pie I used to get at the Big Boy Restaurant!โ Everyone loved it! Thanks for the easy recipe ~ Iโll be making it again, for sure!
